- Label announces multi-year deal with respected Mahraganat label 100 Copies
Wednesday March 18th, 2020: Sony Music Entertainment Middle East today dropped Kolo Festak with Mahraganat star Hamo Bika featuring Filo & Abo El Shouq. The smash record is the latest from one of the biggest stars of the Egyptian genre and heralds the announcement of Sony’s multi-year deal with 100 Copies. This is the first of many releases between the two labels. The historic multi-year partnership signed between the two labels, will see collaborations with a host of leading Mahraganat talents to release new music through 2019 and 2020. Sony Music will also represent the 100 Copies catalogue world-wide and together collaborate on opportunities around these genre defining releases of the past 10 years.
The name 100 Copies comes from the founder and label’s inspiration Mahmoud Refat, only putting out 100 CD’s of each underground release he put out. Since those early days, Mahmoud has established an unrivalled reputation in Cairo and the whole region for stand out young artists, and brilliant music.
Refat remains a tireless advocate of the music, quick to compare the mahraganat artists he works with to older Egyptian artists like the beloved singer Oum Kalthoum. “Oum Kalthoum is someone who I have a lot of respect [for], we all do. But the music of the people is happening from mahraganat,” he says. “The fashion, the lyrics, the words! The language! The development of the language—the street language. The signs. The body language. The choreography. The attitude. The culture. The way you walk from here to there. The way you set up a party. The way you build a house. This is all related to mahraganat.”
